Laboratory measurements of the homogeneous freezing of aqueous sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate droplets: How well does the translated melting-point curve model work?
نویسنده
چکیده
Other recent laboratory measurements for aqueous ammonium sulfate and sulfuric acid solutions show considerable variability in freezing point temperatures – much more than is predicted by the widely-used translated melting-point curve (TMPC) idea of Koop et al. (2000). This paper reports on results from laboratory measurements of homogeneous ice nucleation in aqueous droplets containing two common upper-tropospheric solutions – ammonium sulfate and sulfuric acid. Measurements were made using a droplet free-fall freezing tube technique. Our measured freezing point temperatures are in agreement with the lowest temperature results from previous laboratory experiments, but we find temperatures considerably lower than those predicted by the TMPC idea. Given our current understanding of ice cloud formation, we predict that high critical supersaturations can occur in cloud-free regions of the upper troposphere when homogeneous ice nucleation in aqueous sulfuric acid aerosol is the primary ice formation mechanism.

How well does water activity determine homogeneous ice nucleation temperature in aqueous sulfuric acid and ammonium sulfate droplets?
Frozen fraction measurements made using a droplet free-fall freezing tube apparatus are presented and used, with other recent laboratory measurements, to evaluate how well both the water activity idea and the translated meltingpoint curve idea of Koop et al. (2000) predict homogeneous freezing-point temperatures for aqueous ammonium sulfate and sulfuric acid solution droplets. The new freezing-...

During the measurement campaign FROST (FReezing Of duST), LACIS (Leipzig Aerosol Cloud Interaction Simulator) was used to investigate the immersion freezing behavior of size selected, coated and uncoated Arizona Test Dust (ATD) particles with a mobility diameter of 300 nm. Particles were coated with succinic acid (C4H6O4), sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4). Ice fractions at...

A new process is presented by which water soluble organics might influence ice nucleation, ice growth, chemical reactions and water uptake of aerosols in the upper troposphere: the formation of glassy aerosol particles. Glasses are disordered amorphous (non-crystalline) solids that form when a liquid is cooled without crystallization until the viscosity increases exponentially and molecular dif...

Nano silica sulfuric acid as a solid acid, was described to be an effective catalyst for one-pot three-component reaction of kojic acid, aryl aldehydes and indoles for the preparation of 2-substituted aryl (indolyl) kojic acid derivatives. The catalyst was prepared by combination of chlorosulfonic acid to nano silica gel. The size of nanoparticles were observed with SEM.All prepared compounds w...
